welcome back to my undertale lets play!!!
today we are going over the first part of "waterfall", the third section of the game.
last post we finished the papyrus fight, capping off the snowdin section
as you can see, we
finally found out where those ice cubes end up
bold faced lie on my end.
waterfall isnt their final destination, and they will keep going onto the next area(s). I SWEAR they exist for a reason
oh. this is tamer than i thought. where the hell is undyne? papyrus kept hyping her up but i dont see her at all!!
i guess a break is nice... we did just fight papyrus I guessssss
be sure to grab the save point, since you'll probably need to be healed from after the papyrus fight
in here you'll have the option to hang out with sans back in snowdin, but for the sake of covering as much of waterfall as possible, I am going to skip the
sans hangout
in which, he mainly talks about his brother and a echo flowers, a type of flower that repeats what its told back to its listener.
it's heavily implied that the flower hes talking about maybe just maybe MIGHT NOT BE an echo flower.
I sure wonder if that's important later... (on pacifist route, it is)
for now.
in the room to the right, there is actually a secret room behind the waterfall with the rocks
inside, you can get the best piece of armor you can get at this point, the old tutu.
this is a big upgrade from the manly bandana, as this gives 7 more defense. the item description wasnt kidding.
THERES UNDYNE!!! FINALLY!!!!
papyrus tries to talk her down from hunting you, but she is having none of that
next we have a really close call, with undyne catching us hiding in the bush (ignorze the steam notification, it got caught in my screenshot!!!)
after this cutscene, theres another save point before you proceed.
the next room introduces "bridge flowers", the focus of most of the puzzles in this section of the game.
by using z, you pick them up and place them down. when you place four in a row, they become a bridge (i know, creative name for the flowers)
first enemy encounter of waterfall!!! (sry!!! forgot screenshots)
i think aaron is supposed to be a weightlifting seahorse, as you can see (again, sorrryyy)
in order to spare him, pick "flex", "flex", and then "flex" again. at this point, aaron flexes himself out of the room, and you automatically win the battle.
as apology for neglecting to capture this creature's image, i have attatched
a
crude imitation
of its likeness
your first instinct might be to create a bridge on the puzzle in the top left of the room, but theres an optional item you should get first
if you take all 4 of the bridge flowers and drop them off here (see screenshot), you can access a secret room.
inside of this room, you'll find a neat bit of flavor text, and the "abandoned quiche".
healing 34 hp, its a pretty decent heal at this part of the game. i wouldnt hold onto it for the whole game though, maybe it was abandoned for a reason????
that feels messed up, sorry quiche!!!!
the main puzzle can be solved by putting all four flowers above you at this spot (see screenshot)
if you, personally, didnt mow down papyrus (like me), he will call you before you go to the next room.
he will mysteriously ask what you're wearing. dont worry, it doesnt make any gameplay changes, it just leads to something funny down the line.
next encounter. washua.
okay i have no damn idea what this thing is supposed to be OH WAIT I SEE IT NOW its like a bucket with water in it thats clever
to spare washua, you need to use the "clean" act, and hit one of the green bullets during the attack.
i got hit a LOT trying to take THAT screenshot
at the end of the hallway, theres a blank space. interact with it, and a door appears. the signs in this room actually tell you where to find this door, but for the sake of brevity, I skipped it. if you're reading this blog, i doubt you mind that much anyways LOL you can now proceed
if you've been reading the signs, theres more of them in this next room.
when you are finished reading, take the platform to your right
this next room is soooo suspicious something is gonna go DOWN
called ittttttt
i wouldve got screenshots, but i died taking them LOL
undyne will ambush you and throw spears at you. just keep going right. she cant keep it up forever
once you hit the room with the grass, undyne will catch up with you and try to capture you, but she'll grab the kid we saw earlier in waterfall instead
after the cutscene, you may proceed
the next room is another one of those mouse rooms with just a save point, so i'd take the free heal and save my game.
next is a room w/ sans and a couple paths. going up will take you into a room w/ the nice cream rabbit from snowdin
for 25g, its an alright heal. get it if your inventory isnt full. if you buy a nice cream here, you get a "punch card", which apparently can be used to like,
break the game LOL
you can use the punch card to skip locked doors, cutscenes, etc. for speedrunning, punch card exploits are super important. its really cool stuff if you care about that kind of stuff
its above my skillset, so i instead move on.
going straight right will show you a room with a duck you cant reach yet. sure wonder when thatll come up
instead, go down into the area with the teal water.
if you go down and then left, you can find the "ballet shoes" to complete your set. if you are
FIGHTing
through flavor text, its actually implied that the previous owner of the shoes and tutu (the fallen child w/ the dark blue soul) was actually somewhat violent before their soul was taken.
we don't get MUCH characterization for the fallen humans, which lets the player fill in the blanks.
there is actually a popular undertale fangame called "UNDERTALE YELLOW" created for this purpose, following an interpertation of the yellow soul.
in battles, id recommend picking these up.
they grant 7 attack, the best until hotland. they are found behind this bush (refer to screenshot)
return to the original path, and keep going down.
that line i talked about earlier was pretty short, because papyrus is calling us regarding our clothes
in an attempt to help, he told undyne what we were wearing, assuming youd change your clothes after such a suspcious question
if i recall correctly, theres alternative dialogue if you choose to lie about your clothes to papyrus.
from this point, just follow the path.
its at this point i got into another encounter, with two moldsmal..?
i just immediately spared them both.. seems like a
weird encounter
in waterfall, there is a chance for a moldsmal to be replaced with a "moldbygg", a stronger varient that you actually DO have to ACT with to spare.
we just got really lucky LOL
but mkay...
once you leave that area, you'll find onion-san, whos ultimately harmless, if a bit lonely
unfortunately, you cant save them all
before i could take a screenshot of this next room, i get into another battle!
this one is against shyren, i wonder whats her disposition
in order to spare her, you must pick "hum"
although you only need to hum once, selecting the act again yields unique dialogue, if that is your fancy. as much as this lets play glosses over the dialogue, that should be the reason why you play this game
thats where the SOUL is, excuse the undertale pun.
to the top of this room is a piano puzzle. although you could wait for the solution later, we are totally above that.
the combo is neutral up right neutral down down right.
this is actually the melody to the song "memory".
inside lies the
legendary artifact
even longtime fans still have no damn idea what this item is ACTUALLY meant to do. what's so "legendary" about it?
hell if i know
, which is stolen from us before we even have the chance to grab it.
its probably for the best, it would make the game too easy.
leave the puzzle room then proceed to the right.
next youll find a statue with water pouring on it. in the next room, if you take an umbrella and bring it to this room, you can put it on the statue
this is how you get the melody for the puzzle.
for a game where the creator said he avoided adding colors to the fight because it would make the rest of the game look bad in comparison, undertale truly looks beautiful at times
the monster kid from earlier will tag along with you as you walk through the path. they have no arms, so they cant hold their own umbrella.
undertale's biggest strength is world building. for as little of this vast underground we can see, a far larger world exists.
this game features a very diverse cast, in a deeply varied world
for a group of people trapped "hopelessly" in the underground, they still love each other, and i think thats really beautiful
at this point, youll reach a dead end. in return for you helping monster kid (yes, that is their canon name, its on merch and everything.) they will act as a stepping stool, letting you proceed
in a dark room, you find another save point, and an empty bridge. we are sooo getting ambushed.
like last chase, KEEP, GOING, RIGHT!!!
its all you can do actually scratch that, go down first LOL
once you get to the big area THEN you can start going right again.
oh great. we're cornered.
now, go back left, and face your fate.
then, you hear memories that arent (exactly) yours. without getting into spoilers, a lot of this game revolves around the aftermath of two kids, a monster and a human, who
passed away
the text that shows up when you die actually is related to the human, a revelation that can be made towards the end of the game organically.
the two children and their story are a recurring motif in this story.
you'll see a lot of who they were throughout the narrative. maybe theyre still kicking around, in some way shape or form. maybe in the ways the flowers bloom, or the texts that fill the rooms? for anyone not versed in this game, i probably sound like a geek.
just note that this placement is very deliberate
through each of the 3 main routes, you learn a LOT about them.
they mean a lot to this world
here we are.
that concludes part one of my lets play of waterfall!! this marks roughly the midpoint of the area..
i hope you all enjoyed my playthrough, and i hope you all pick up the game, if you havent. on sale, it gets pretty cheap. hope that i sold you on this game by now
have a great day, and thank you for reading!! ^_^
